Overview of Bendigo Road Safety Strategy Survey Results

Thank you for your interest in the Road Safety Strategy. We heard from 251 people about road safety across Greater Bendigo. This feedback will be used to shape the new Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2022 – 2027.

How people travel around Greater Bendigo

When considering the safety of different transport types:

Of the people who responded to the survey:

  • 81% feel safe when travelling by car
  • 69% feel safe when walking
  • A high proportion (40%) don’t cycle. Of those that do, 35% felt safe and 65% felt unsafe
  • Most (61%) don’t catch public transport. Of those that do, 79% felt safe and 21% felt unsafe
  • Most (81%) don’t ride a motorcycle. Of those that do, 42% felt safe and 58% felt unsafe

          Blue indicates safe, yellow neutral, and green unsafe

          Bendigo city centre roads

          52% of respondents think Bendigo City Centre roads are safe, 24% were neutral and 24% think they are unsafe

          52% of respondents think urban/town roads are safe, 22% were neutral and 26% think they are unsafe

          36% of respondents think rural roads are safe, 34% were neutral and 30% think they are unsafe

          Driver behaviour and infrastructure were identified as posing the greatest barriers for road safety in Greater Bendigo. People think cyclists, P-plate drivers and elderly drivers are at the greatest risk of being involved in a crash.
