The City is a Naming Authority for places that they own or manage. Naming of all roads, features and localities in Victorian need to follow the statutory requirements of the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria.

Registering place names is essential to identify locations for managing emergencies and delivering goods and services in Victoria.

The City is undertaking this process to officially have this site registered with Geographic Names Victoria and protect our community.

This project is a regulatory requirement to register the site name, the name change is occurring during this process. The engagement is not about the service provision or waste management, all feedback must comply to the purpose of this engagement which is the registration of the name with Geographic Names Victoria.

The Strathfieldsaye Transfer Station is a part of the City's commitment to helping community members rescue, reuse, repurpose, repair and recycle goods and materials wherever possible to reduce waste going to the landfill. There are many great reasons to do this including:

• Reducing the amount of energy and resources needed to make new things which helps combat climate change;
• Saving space in landfill;
• Protecting our local environment and wildlife; and
• Saving money – both for the site and also for community members

Our Transfer Stations play an important role in this process, however the current name of this site doesn’t provide a clear indication of the purpose of the site.

As part of the registration of the site the City is proposing to rename the Strathfieldsaye Transfer Station to Strathfieldsaye Recycling Centre. The proposed name has been selected to encourage community to identify reusables and recyclables at home, and maximise resource recovery at the centre. The proposed name will help reframe the Strathfieldsaye centre as a place to find items for re-use or re-purposing.
