The Project

The City of Greater Bendigo is committed to providing fun and interesting playspaces for local families and visitors to enjoy.

  • Location:

Garden Gully Playspace is located at Ashley Street, Ironbark

Playspaces are identified as neighbourhood, suburban or municipal spaces. You can read about the differences in the frequently asked questions below. Garden Gully playspace is currently spaces identified as a neighbourhood playspace.

The City identified a gap in the service level for this area. To increase service provision, during the renewal of the playspace, it will be upgraded to a suburban level playspace.

The playspace currently has limited visibility from the street. It will be relocated to a new location to the west of the hockey ground during the renewal stage. This will improve accessibility and visibility from the street and hockey ground. The new location will also improve the connection of the playspace to the future Ironbark Gully Trail. A new public toilet block will also be constructed.

The old playspace will be removed once the new one is constructed.

The City is seeking community feedback on the features of the new playspace design.

Frequently asked questions

Why are we doing these upgrades?

These upgrades were identified in the Garden Gully Reserve Master Plan completed in 2024. You can read more about the master plan by clicking the button below.

The definitions of spaces is provided in the City's Public Space Strategy.

Municipal space

Description: These spaces attract visitation mostly from residents across the City of Greater Bendigo. The spaces tend to occupy strategically important and highly accessible locations, and are more often found within or close to the Bendigo urban area. They are unique in the experience and service that they offer within Greater Bendigo.

Suburb or Township (Suburban)

Description: These spaces support the open space needs of whole communities, whether a suburb of urban Bendigo or a rural township. They are likely also be used by residents of surrounding areas (i.e. a wider district).

Neighbourhood

Description: Spaces which are intended primarily for local area use by residents within close walking distance. Within the urban area, they often occur as smaller-scale open spaces and as local links

The new toilet block will be a modular construction with one all abilities, and 2 ambulant toilets which are Unisex/gender neutral.

There will be a baby changing station in the all abilities toilet. To improve access and visibility, the toilet block will be fitted with timed lighting, door signage, and decals. The toilet will be open to public between 6am and 9pm

  • The City has designing unisex (or gender neutral) toilets at a number of travel routes and high use community facilities. e.g. Axedale, Redesdale, Huntly, Crusoe no 7, Maiden Gully, Long Gully splash park and Eaglehawk Canterbury Park
  • Research supports that uni-sex toilet cubicles provide flexibility and shorter wait times in high use areas, reducing wait times for users
  • Uni-sex toilets support people with different social, cultural and demographic preferences i.e., LGBTIQA+ community
  • Individual cubicles with clear visibility provide an increased level of safety for users
  • It provides basins in each cubicle to allow the person to visit and wash their hands in the safety of a locked space
  • ‘Universal design’ means that products, buildings, environment, and experiences are accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of their age, level of ability, cultural background, or any other factors that contribute to the diversity of our communities

The site is also used for temporary spectator seating during event days for the hockey ground. Space has been provided for spectators, media and food trucks in the area where a 10m clear space is shown on the map.

A flying fox, including smaller sized options, can't be built with the space available at the site, or use the space mentioned above.

There's already a lot of activities at this reserve, including the dog off leash area, hockey ground, cricket pitch, and the new playspace. These activities already create noise, a hardcourt will only increase the noise levels, creating more disturbance for the residents.

The nearest outdoor fitness equipment is located 1.7km away in Long Gully splash park.

There is currently no funding allocated towards fitness equipment in this project. However, should a need arise in the future, appropriate grant funding can be explored but is not guaranteed.

We need to complete the engagement stage, finalise the design of the playspace and the approval process, and place orders for all equipment and contractors.

The City is working towards construction starting at the end of 2025. It is estimated to be completed by mid 2027.

Next steps

Once the survey on the playspace closes, we will review all the feedback. Any edits to the plan will be made and go through the approval process. We will keep you up to date on this project on this project page.
