The projects
The City is doing multiple flood and waterway studies in areas that often flood to become more resilient and ready for future extreme weather.
Flood studies look at how water moves through the land. This is used to create flood maps.
Waterway studies use flood maps to check where riverine flooding might happen. They also look at how the land is used and cared for. These studies help protect important things like people, buildings, nature, and other special places.
The study areas include:
- Goornong flood study
- Heathcote waterways study
- Junortoun waterways study
- Epsom Huntly waterways study
The floods that happened in October 2022 and January 2024 showed a need for the studies. The studies will look at things like rainfall, land changes, and how to care for and develop the land in the future.
The latest weather data, including climate change predictions, and lessons from past floods will be used as part of the studies
We want to hear from you about your experiences with flooding in your local area. This will help ensure our studies reflect what happens on the ground.
The City will work with flood consultants and our partners to develop the studies. Partners include Traditional Owners and North Central Catchment Management Authority.
