The project
We know the Eaglehawk district has a rich history and unique character. We are now preparing the Eaglehawk Heritage Study, starting with a thematic history. We want you to share the stories that have shaped Eaglehawk to paint the full picture and celebrate Eaglehawk's heritage.
In December 2024 community were invited to a workshop where heritage consultants Mandy Jean and Charles Fahey, were engaged to prepare Stage 1 of the Eaglehawk Heritage Study (the thematic history).
Mandy and Charles have been busy researching the history of Eaglehawk and have collated some themes that will form the basis of the study. Community members were invited to share their stories and suggestions at the workshop.
The City will work with the consultants to develop a draft thematic history of the Eaglehawk district. Targeted engagement with local experts will be carried out to strive for better accuracy. When a full draft is ready, this will be released for broader community input.
All feedback will be treated seriously. There is an enormous amount of local knowledge and expertise, so further feedback will be critical to deliver the highest quality study for Eaglehawk.
Frequently Asked Questions
A thematic history identifies and explains the main factors, processes and events that have shaped a particular location or subject. It is the first step towards developing a Heritage Study.
A thematic history is a broad historical overview of an area. Stage 2 of a heritage study provides a detailed analysis of individual properties or places.
The study area covers the former former Borough of Eaglehawk. This includes Eaglehawk, Eaglehawk North, Sailors Gully, California Gully, Jackass Flat and parts of Long Gully.
We want to hear your stories and memories about the place, and what is important to you about Eaglehawk’s history.
We want to hear everyone's stories!
